Winter on "The Hill"

Jack Collecting Snow

This is a picture of Jack collecting chunks of frozen snow to take into our house to be melted in a big square tub on the top of our stove. He would pile up the tub with snow and during the night it would melt down, on the stove, so that there was enough very hot melted snow to put into the washing machine where I could put some more snow to cool it off enough to wash the laundry. This was a very long, tedious chore and it took all day to do a week's laundry. Drying it was another nightmare!!! In the background of this photo one can see the house where we resided first before moving to this second place.

Snow Storm
This picture, a snowstorm in the middle of the day, was taken from our front door. I believe they were referred to as "white outs." That is the sun trying to shine through the falling and blowing snow. The building is where some of the staff of the harbour's board lived. It was to this building that we had to walk if we wanted to make any phone calls as we had no phone in our place. Jack would also have to walk to this building where he would be picked up in a Navy vehicle to be taken to the Navy station HMCS Churchill. Jack aka Jake was a storesman at the base.
