This photo is the square of the townsite. I believe that the square was called Hudson Square. Standing in front of one of the stores is my husband Jack with a baby buggy with our eldest son Michael. At this store we purchased meat and other groceries. I am not sure what the other buildings are. Somewhere in there is a laundry. Jack says that he thinks that the name of the store was Anderson's Store. Maybe someone else can confirm this or fill in the missing names.
On my first trip to do some grocery shopping at Anderson's Store I was surprised to find that I could not find any vanilla extract on the shelves. I wanted to do some baking. It seems that vanilla extract had to be kept in another part of the store and we had to ask for it. The reason: because of the alcohol content in the vanilla the natives and some young people would get it if it was on the shelf with the other baking supplies.
This photo was taken from beside the cannon that was in town. In this photo is the Igloo Theater, Northern Light Bakery, (and possibly a bowling alley and post office, not sure about this). Maybe someone can fill in the names of the other places.
This picture, a post card from my collection, is what the HBC (Hudson's Bay Company) looked like when we lived there. When I first went into this store I felt like I had stepped into the past. I was a city gal from Victoria, B.C. When I needed to go to the base to see the doctor (I was pregnant) I had to walk through the native village to the front of the HBC Store to catch a bus that drove to the base a few times a day. I would then have to take the bus back to Churchill and then walk back out to our shack on The Hill.
The Churchill Hotel was owned and operated by "Pop" Reid when we were there in the 50s. The hotel had a bar and it was quite an event when the bar closed for the evening and the patrons headed for the bus to the base or to walk to their homes, especially in a snowstorm.
One time, while living at the base, I had reason to go into the townsite by myself on the bus. I did my shopping and then when I got the bus to return back to the base I made the mistake of getting the bus that was filled up with the guys coming out of the Churchill Hotel Bar. I think everyone on the bus was drunk except me and the bus driver (at least I hope he was not). I was two weeks overdue to have our daughter Jacquie and I was scared stiff. The drunk that was sitting next to me kept falling asleep and falling onto my shoulder. I kept thinking to myself, "I sure hope I don't go into labour while on this bus load of drunks." I made it home OK and I was sure glad when all those guys got off the bus before I had to get up to get off.
This road looks out toward the Harbour's Board and out to The Hill. Boy, does this ever bringing back memories!
I think this cannon may have been taken from Fort Prince of Wales, but that is only a guess. Maybe someone one can tell me. I wonder whatever happened to this cannon. It sat in the middle of the town. That is Jack and Michael in front of it. I never dreamed when I took this picture that I would be showing it on a website. Had no idea even what a website was back then.
This post card is an aerial view of the Churchill townsite with some of the surrounding area. It would be interesting if someone could identify some of the landmarks in the photo.
