"The Hill" & Village

The Hill 1954

This is "The Hill" where we and a few other navy families lived in small houses that were owned by Frank Martin. Frank worked as a driver for the Navy. He represented Canada as a boxer in the 1932 Olympics. Red Hoffman was another Navy driver at that time.

Also in this picture are some of the homes of the local natives and part of the trail we had to travel to get to our homes on "The Hill." Three of the homes up on the hill can be seen in the left part of the skyline. It was not unusual for us to see some of the men in this camp skinny dipping in some of the pools of melted snow in the springtime. Some of the people in the camp would laugh at us as we walked by pushing baby buggies, especially if it was our husbands who were pushing the buggies.

Native Village
This photo is from a post card of the native village. The First Nations People (I am not sure of the name of their tribe) lived in tents and wood shacks just outside of the townsite of Churchill. We walked through their area on our way to "The Hill." Most of the native families had dog teams so there were lots of dogs in these camps.
