Port of Churchill and Grain Elevator

Grain Elevator in Summer
I find it amazing that the Harbour's Board grain elevator and the scenery around it has not changed much in the past fifty years. I took this picture in 1954.

Port of Churchill in Winter (about 1955)
"The plane flies over the ice-locked port of Churchill. Smoke from a nearby military base mingles with the haze, and the entire scene is one of winter and isolation. In the brief summer, this same area would be a hustle of activity. But winter is king, and this is the end of the flight." Source: Winnipeg Free Press

Ships Arriving at the Port

This photo was taken from the front (and only) door of our second residence. The ship is arriving to be loaded with wheat. You can see another ship tied up at the dock and the train. The roofs of some sheds and houses can be seen in the foreground. No one we knew seemed to know what those buildings were there for. There was a nice sandy beach down in front of these buildings. My friend and fellow navy wife, Betty Thompson and her young son, Danny, and I would go down and sit on this beach occasionally in the summer time. In the winter when the bay was frozen we could see the natives with their dog teams crossing on the ice.

Ships Arriving and Leaving the Port

The ship in this photo is loaded with wheat and headed for some other part of the world.

Ship at Dock
"Capt. Ralph Eyre-Walker of the British vessel La Hacienda said Tuesday at Churchill that the La Hacienda had made the trip from London to the Hudson Bay port in 9 1/2 days, a record for a ship from the British Isles to Churchill. The La Hacienda is shown in photo above loading this week at Churchill for the second time this season. Now enroute to the Netherlands, her cargo is 9,720 tons of wheat." Grain Elevator (Winter)
This picture of the grain elevator is actually an old post card. It would be interesting if someone could fill in some details of grain elevator operation during the 1950s.
