Some travelers are independent by nature and enjoy the challenges of planning their own Churchill experience in order to customize it for their personal priorities. This page has been assembled in response to questions from numerous site visitors who want to plan their trip independently. If you enjoy this challenge, this page is especially for you.

Travel agencies and tour operators provide valuable services; in fact, tourism in Churchill is dominated by tour operators. Most service providers, especially motels, are accustomed to working with tour companies in planning group travel. This has the potential to present challenges for independent travelers, especially during polar bear season when tours often book all of the available rooms. Because of this, independent travelers need to work to find feasible schedules combining transportation, lodging and tundra buggy tours.

The travel planning strategy below is based both on my experience with independent travel to Churchill and feedback from many other site users on their trips. The assumption is that aquiring lodging will be the hardest part of planning, securing a tundra buggy tour next, and scheduling transportation easiest. With regard to getting to Churchill, flights may be harder to come by than train tickets, although bedrooms on trains are only available to book them very early in the season. Don't be discouraged by a lack of bedrooms on the train. The seat cushions can be realligned for sleep and you get to experience local culture.

The challenging part of the process is coordinating transportation with lodging and tundra buggy tour availability. This strategy suggests using a telephone rather than email. Coordinating and planning is both challenging and time sensitive, and most service providers don't respond to email in a timely enough fashion. Here's the strategy I suggest:

  1. Determine the entire block of time during which you could possibly schedule your holiday in Churchill, giving consideration to Churchill's seasons below.
  2. Decide how many days you want to spend in Churchill. If you're going to watch polar bears, how many days do you want to spend on tundra buggy tours? What else would you like to do in Churchill? If you are going by train, the schedule limits you to a choice of 1, 3, 4, 5 or 6 days. As a practical matter, the train arrives in Churchill too late to schedule a tundra buggy tour on your date of arrival.
  3. Look at a calendar and determine the dates of your potential travel.
  4. Decide whether you want to fly or take the train.
  5. Start calling to see if you can get a room for the nights you need. Call all of the lodging options to see what, if anything, is available. It is possible that you might even have to find lodging in two different places. If no lodging is available, try again in a week or two. Then try again. When you hear that a room is available, proceed immediately to the next step.
  6. Call the tundra buggy tour operators to see if you can get tundra buggy tours on the days you want to be in Churchill.
  7. Check airline and train schedules to determine specific dates when you can schedule transportation.
  8. If you have a coordinated schedule of lodging, tundra buggy tour(s) and transportation at this point, immediately make your calls and make reservations!
  9. LOOP: You need to complete steps 5, 6 and 7 in sequence. If you strike out on any of them you have to go back to step 5 and start over. Try to be flexible within your block of time.

Information below is current as of early 2004. Updates and corrections will be made as they come to my attention. I appreciate input from site visitors who have additional or more current information (email: sphutchens@yahoo.com). Please use "Churchill" in the subject line of your email and, just for the fun of it, please tell me which province, state, or country you live in so I can put a pin in my map!

NOTE: Seasons are approximate and vary from year to year with weather.

I get quite a few questions about the best time to visit Churchill to see polar bears. The table above, based on information from the Churchill Northern Studies Centre website, provides the most reliable guidelines. The actual time of polar bear migration is influenced by weather patterns. If the weather turns cold early and stays cold, polar bears may migrate earlier. If the fall is warm and it stays warm well into October, polar bears will probably migrate later. In general, the mid-point of the timeline for seeing polar bears provides the greatest likelihood of seeing them in significant numbers.

Similarly, the mid-point of the timeline for each of the reasons for visiting Churchill provides the highest likelihood of success.

How do you Get to Churchill?

Several times a year someone asks,"Can you drive to Churchill?" No. The road ends at Gillam, approximately 170 miles south of Churchill. For all practical purposes, you have two choices: train or plane. I suppose that during the summer when Hudson Bay is free of ice you might find a way to get there by water, but I've never heard of anyone doing that.

Churchill by Train from Winnipeg

Travel to Churchill by train requires a day and a half each way (35 hours, 45 minutes to be exact). ViaRail #693 departs from the Via Rail station in Winnipeg (123 Main Street, Winnipeg) at 8:45 PM on Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Sundays, arriving in Churchill at 8:30 AM on the second day (Thursdays, Saturdays, and Tuesdays). The train schedule (available online) allows for stays in Churchill of 1, 3, 4, 5, or 6 days (or 8, 10, 11, 12, 13 or longer, of course). Here are the options if you go by train:

The return from Churchill to Winnipeg on ViaRail #692 departs at 8:30 PM on Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Saturdays, arriving in Winnipeg at 8:05 AM on the second day (Thursdays, Saturdays, and Mondays).

The least expensive round trip to Churchill from Winnipeg is VIA Rail Economy Class with a seven day advance purchase ($333.84 in December 2004). A single bedroom, which sells out by January for the fall polar bear season, is about $439 additional if one is available. Although bedrooms are difficult to come by, the seats make acceptable sleeping arrangements for the hardy and/or frugal traveler (see my Travelogue for a description of how this works).

Undoubtedly the bargain or the century is a North American Rail Pass. According to one correspondent the pass was only $464.40 (off-season, senior rate). She traveled thousands of miles in the 30-day life of the pass, including Churchill! Check Amtrak or Via Rail Canada for more information.

If you drive to Winnipeg you can arrange long term parking for your car at the VIA Station or Hotel Fort Garry, conveniently located only two blocks from the station. See the table below for details.

Churchill by Train from Thompson or Gillam
Drive a little ... save a lot ... and enjoy more of Manitoba!

Although Thompson, Manitoba (population 14,977), is 762 km (474 miles) from Winnipeg, it may be a feasible drive for some travelers, especially those living in western Canada or the northwestern United States. It is only 173 km (108 miles) further from Vancouver to Thompson than it is from Vancouver to Winnipeg. Thompson, "Hub of the North," has a nice website with 10 good reasons to visit.

From Thompson the VIA fare to Churchill is $109.14 and the trip takes only 14:35. It boards at 5:55 PM the evening before arriving in Churchill. Long term parking for cars is available at three locations. Parking for RVs is available at McCreedy Park Campground (on the north edge of Thompson) and, on a space-available basis, at Thompson City Hall. See the table below for details.

Gillam, Manitoba (population 1,909), might be of interest to the adventuresome willing to drive an additional 305 km (189 miles) of unpaved road beyond Thompson for the shortest and least expensive rail experience available. VIA #693 boards in Gillam at 11:50 PM and takes only 8:40 to reach Churchill. The fare is a real bargain: $59.92 round trip. Long term parking is available (see below).

Many travelers enjoy the convenience of having all of the details of travel to unfamiliar places taken care of. The camaraderie and socialization with others on a tour can contribute to the enjoyment.

Watching Polar Bears

The only way to see polar bears in the tundra is on a day tour. The independent traveler can arrange tundra buggy tours to watch polar bears through Great White Bear Tours and Tundra Buggy Tours (Frontiers North Adventures). All inclusive polar bear tours (transportation, lodging, meals, tundra buggy tours, etc.) are also offered by the firms listed.

A question I get frequently is, "Should I plan one day to watch polar bears or two?" I don't think there is a right or wrong answer to this, because it depends on the individual and how much interest you have in other opportunities to explore Churchill. If you are really fascinated with polar bears, you might enjoy two days. Personally, given the limited time in Churchill, I chose one day so I could use the other day to explore the town and area in a rented vehicle. Viewing bears two consecutive days, you are likely to see the same bears doing the same fascinating things. Make your choice and enjoy Churchill either way ... or stay an extra day so you can do both!

Watching the Northern Lights

January through March is the best time to see the Northern Lights (Aurora Borealis). From an expert in Churchill: "It is better to view the Northern Lights during the new moon. The full moon does affect viewing but often during February and March the lights are bright enough that they are still present (and spectacular) during that phase. With regard to the impact of a full moon, it will dim the aurora, yes, and it will affect the colour (green turns a bit grey), but a bright and dancing aurora and a full moon look really, really cool! What a full moon might affect is open shutter photography, but you can still try it out just in case. Also, the full moon rising in Churchill is incredible. It is a giant red ball coming up over the horizon - as it starts it almost looks like a forest fire in the distance. Watch the SpaceWeather.com forecast in the days before and during the trip. It will give you an idea of good viewing times or what to expect." There is a spectacular Aurora Gallery at SpaceWeather.com.

Northern light viewing (January through March) can be arranged through the firms listed below.
