On the way to Bird Cove (about 15 km east of Churchill) is the wreck of the Ithaca, a freighter which went down in a storm in 1961 at the western edge of the cove. Take care walking on the beach as the tides rises and falls very quickly. The decks of the freighter are rusted through and are not safe to walk on. It is dangerous to walk in this area during the polar bear migration season.
